From Proto-Finnic *kauha, from Proto-Finno-Permic *kawša, itself borrowed from Proto-Baltic *káuˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *kowh₂-, from the root *kewh₂-. Compare Lithuanian káušas (ladle, dipper, big spoon).
