From Proto-Uralic *lüppe (butterfly). Cognates include Southern Mansi лӓпӓх (lӓpӓh), Sosva Mansi ла̄панты (lāpanty, butterfly), Finnish liippo (butterfly), and Eastern Mari лыве (lyve, butterfly).[1]
