Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *laiša, close to the Balto-Slavic word for 'foliage'. Compare Lithuanian laĩškos (leaf), Latvian laĩska (leaf on a linen stalk; stalk), Slavic *listь 'leaf'[1]. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *(u)laś-, from Proto-Indo-European *Huelh1- 'wool'. Cognate to Latin vellus (wool, fleece, skin)[2].
