From Proto-Albanian *laiša, close to the Balto-Slavic word for 'foliage'. Compare Lithuanian laĩškos (leaf), Latvian laĩska (leaf on a linen stalk; stalk), Proto-Slavic *listь (leaf).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *(u)laś-, from Proto-Indo-European *Huelh1- (wool). Cognate to Latin vellus (wool, fleece, skin).[2]
