From earlier mbë (compare Tosk Albanian mbë), from Proto-Albanian *ambi, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi (round, around), from *h₂énti. Cognate with Latin ambi, am ((a)round) and Sanskrit अभि (abhí, round, around).
