Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English monchen, a variant of mocchen, mucchen ("to munch (food); chew audibly"; > Modern English dialectal mouch), probably imitative in origin (compare crunch). Compare also Old French mangier, mengier (“to bite; eat”), of similar sound and meaning.
