Etymology
From nej (“no”), similar to jaka (“to say yes”). From Old Swedish neka, Norwegian neikka, Danish nege, applying a -k suffix to Icelandic nei and Old Swedish ne. This goes further back to Germanic nikon. There is also an additional -t suffix in Swedish dialectal näkta, south Swedish nejta, Danish negte, Norwegian nekta
