[edit]Borrowed from Arabic أُقْنُوم (ʔuqnūm), ultimately from Classical Syriac ܩܢܽܘܡܳܐ (qnōmā, “self, essence, person, hypostasis”). The reasons how this word's meaning developed into "infamous" are still unclear.
