From Proto-Indo-European *h₂oren, *h₃eren, *h₃érō. Cognates include Proto-Slavic *orьlъ, and Ancient Greek ὄρνις (órnis). The form orrll has been influenced by the Slavic term. The form orrl is derived from the Slavic term.[1]
