From Proto-Finnic *püsüdäk, from Proto-Finno-Permic *pise-w- with the passive suffix -w- causing labialization of the initial -i- to -y-. Cognates include Finnish pysyä, Livonian püzüö, Ludian püzüdä, Veps püžuda, Võro püsümä, Votic püsüä, Erzya пезнамс (peznams), Moksha пезомс (pezoms) and Eastern Mari пижа́ш (pižáš).
