[edit]Probably from Vulgar Latin *peccuinnus, from *pittīnus, perhaps from a Celtic or Frankish root (cf. Proto-Celtic *bikkos (“small”); Old Irish bec, Irish beag, Welsh bach/bychan, Breton bihan). Compare Portuguese pequeno, cf. also French petit.
