Etymology

[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 分子, composed of (portion) and (child; small thing), from Japanese 分子 (bunshi), from Middle Chinese 分子 (bjunH tsiX, part; division; component; member, literally portion child).

    分子 [Vietnamese Literary Sinitic, trad.]
From: Commentary of Guliang, circa 206 BCE– 9 CE
Yan is a part of Zhou

The tone is slightly irregular, and a regular form would be *phận tử. For the tone difference between phần tử and phân tử, see phần. Doublet of phân tử. Cognate with Mandarin 分子 (fènzǐ) and Cantonese 分子 (fan6 zi2).
