From Vulgar Latin *podiāre, from Latin podium. Compare Catalan and Occitan pujar, Portuguese pojar, Friulian poiâ, Venetian pojar, cf. also French appuyer, Spanish apoyar, Italian appoggiare, from a related Vulgar Latin *appodiāre.
