Of uncertain origin; perhaps of Semitic origin, such as Hebrew פטריה (mushroom), Classical Syriac ܦܐܬܘܪܬܐ, Arabic فطر (mushroom). Or, related to bot (toad), recalling the shape of a big mushroom. Or, from Middle French poistron, from Late Latin posterio, from Latin posterus (following, next).
