Of uncertain origin; perhaps of Semitic origin, such as Hebrew פטריה (“mushroom”), Classical Syriac ܦܐܬܘܪܬܐ, Arabic فطر (“mushroom”). Or, related to bot (“toad”), recalling the shape of a big mushroom. Or, from Middle French poistron, from Late Latin posterio, from Latin posterus (“following, next”).
