Etymology[edit]

From Latin pulmōnārius ‎(of the lungs), from pulmō ‎(lung) + -ārius, from Proto-Indo-European *pléu-mon-. Cognate with Greek πλεμόνι ‎(plemóni), French poumon, Lithuanian plauciai, Polish płuco and Russian пла́вать ‎(plávatʹ, to swim).
