[edit]From Proto-Finnic *purjëh, probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *buriz (“favourable wind”), or alternatively and less likely from Baltic (compare Lithuanian burė, Latvian bura). The Baltic words have also sometimes been proposed to be Finnic loans.
