From Proto-Vietic *k-lən, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁lan; cognates include Pacoh tulán, Khmer ថ្លាន់ (thlan, python), Bahnar klăn (python), Mon ကၠန် (klɔn, python), Car Nicobarese tu-lan (python). This word is a likely cognate of thằn lằn (lizard).
