From Middle Vietnamese tlan, from Proto-Vietic *k-lən, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁lan[1]; cognates include Muong tlăn, Pacoh tulán. Khmer ថ្លាន់ (thlan, python), Bahnar klăn (python), Mon ကၠန် (klɔn, python), Car Nicobarese tu-lan (python).
