vaginalist (plural vaginalists)

1. A gynecological surgeon who specializes in surgery that enters the body through the vagina (as opposed to laparoscopic surgery, for example).
   • 1899, Medical Times - Volume 27, page 26:

     M. Jonesco declared himself to be a laparotomist and not a vaginalist, very often the tubes are diseased before tubal pregnancy exists, and that in cases where there had been rupture at the moment of operation, he was able, thanks to laparotomy, to recognize a diseased tube and to remove the two annexae.

   • 1905, The Chicago Medical Recorder - Volume 27, page 166:

     The unreasonable preference for the vaginal method as a routine procedure was given up by all but a few trained vaginalists, and now we have come to select impartially, according to our knowledge and skill, the proper route for each case.

     An experienced 'vaginalist' has has hardly any need for parasocpic assistance which should influence the renaissance of the vaginal method.

     Unfortunately, Dargent's operation requires that the surgeon be a “vaginalist,” which may limit its availability.
