Etymology

[edit]

Literally, he who never ate his bread in bed, knows not how crumbs can prick. Humorous alteration of a passage in Goethe's “Wilhelm Meister”: Wer nie sein Brot mit Tränen aß, / wer nie die kummervollen Nächte / auf seinem Bette weinend saß, / der kennt euch nicht, ihr himmlischen Mächte. (He who never ate his bread with tears, / who never in sorrowful nights / sat on his bed weeping, / he knows you not, you heavenly powers.)
