Etymology[edit]

Compound of woord (word) +‎ -en- (genitival interfix) +‎ schat (treasure).

Attested since at least 1663, in the book title Nederlandsche woordenschat, gheschikt in twee deelen, van welke 't eene bastaardtwoorden, en 't ander konstwoorden beghrijpt, by Johan Hofman and Lodewijk Meyer.
