Etymology[edit]

Wort (“word”) +‎ Schatz (“treasure”). Cognate with Dutch woordenschat, Afrikaans woordeskat and Luxembourgish Wuertschatz.

Attested since at least 1772 (see quote); possible calque of Dutch woordenschat.
