From Proto-Finnic *üdin, From Proto-Finno-Ugric *wideme. Cognates include Northern Sami ađa((bone with) marrow), Erzya удем(udem, brain; intellect), Eastern Mari вем(vem, marrow) and Hungarian velő(marrow).
