Etymology[edit]

From the modern ξεψυχ(ώ) (literarlly: the soul comes out of me) + -άω (-áo). From the mediaeval Byzantine Greek ξεψυχῶ < ἐξεψυχῶ (exepsukhô), from Koine Greek ἐκψύχω (ekpsúkhō, ancient sense: faint). The ἐκ- (ek-) > ξε- (xe-). See ψυχή (psukhḗ, soul).

  1. (euphemistic) to pass away, pass on, expire, draw one's last breath, bite the dust (to die)
    Ο γνωστός ηθοποιός ξεψύχησε σήμερα το πρωί.

    The well-known actor passed away this morning.
  2. (figuratively) to lose one's power, spark or liveliness (due to work, etc)

  3. (figuratively, transitive) to torture someone, to give them hell (put them through stress etc)
