Inherited from Old Hindi अठ (aṭha) (with the vowel lengthened possibly under influence of other regional forms), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀝𑁆𑀞 (aṭṭha), from Sanskrit अष्ट (aṣṭa), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Haṣṭā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haštā́, from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw. Cognate with Marathi आठ (āṭh), Gujarati આઠ (āṭha), Bengali আট (aṭ), and distantly English eight.
