Etymology

[edit]

From older पहिनना (pahinnā), a metathesis of Old Hindi पिन्हना (pinhanā), from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀺𑀡𑀳𑀤𑀺 (*piṇahadi), from Sanskrit *पिनह्यति (pinahyati), from अपिनह्यति (ápinahyati, ties on, fastens). Related to पनही (panhī, shoe). Cognate with Punjabi ਪਹਿਨਣਾ (pahinṇā).

The early rebracketing of अपि- (api-) +‎ नह्यति (nahyati)अ- (a-) +‎ *पिनह्यति (pinahyati) is attested in Sanskrit पिनह् (pinah, to fasten), पिनह्य (pinahya, having dressed), अपिनह्य (apinahya, having not dressed), and पिनद्ध (pinaddha, tied, wrapped, dressed).
