Etymology 2

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dziŋ (relatives, ancestors), with semantic shift "ancestors" > "line of ancestors" > "line (generic)" (STEDT). Cognate with Old Chinese (OC *sʰin, *sʰins, “relatives”).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Another theory (from where?) compares the word to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *t/duŋ (center), which seems incorrect. Words from this root include Tibetan གཞུང (gzhung, middle, center) and Old Chinese (OC *tuŋ, *tuŋs, “middle”). Luce compares the word to a character with composition ⿰, Middle Chinese transliteration t'âŋ, meaning "a row",[1] which doesn't seem to show up in handwriting recognition sites like qhanzi.”
