  1. Forms captative verbs, i.e. verbs for hunting or catching animals or picking plants.
    kala (fish) → kalastaa (to fish)
    rapu (crab) → ravustaa (to catch crabs)
    metsä (forest) → metsästää (to hunt)
    marja (berry) → marjastaa (to pick berries)
  2. Forms verbs meaning "to make (into)"; ize/-ise
    vahva (strong) → vahvistaa (to strengthen)
    toinen (second) → toistaa (to repeat)
    kaksinkertainen (double) → kaksinkertaistaa (to double)
    tosi (real) → todistaa (to verify)
    into (zeal) → innostaa (to inspire)
    valmis (prepared) → valmistaa (to prepare)

  3. Occasionally used for other purposes, either as to apply a tool onto.
