Germanic, from German, either Hesse 'Hessian' (possibly via Hessenkiel), or from Häsz, Hesz 'clothing, dress'

hes m (plural hessen, diminutive hesje)

  1. A short, protective type of blouse or shirt, typicallly worn by manual laborers
  2. A light version of the above, worn as a signal, notably to be noticed by traffic

Note: It is mostly used in its diminutive form (hesje).
