Middle English sche, hye from earlier scho, hyo [Early Middle English ᵹho], a phonetic development of /hj/ ["hy-"] to /S/ ["sh"] [cf Shetland, Old Norse Hjaltland] from Old English hēo, hīo "she", fem form of hē (“‘he’”). Akin to Old English sēo (“‘the’”), fem form of sē (“‘the’”). Cognate with German sie.
