Middle English sche, hye from earlier scho, hyo [Early Middle English ᵹho], a phonetic development of /hj/ ["hy-"] to /S/ ["sh"] [cf Shetland, Old Norse Hjaltland] from Old English hēo, hīo "she", fem form of  (he). Akin to Old English sēo (the), fem form of  (the). Cognate with German sie.
