From older and dialectal lanj, from Proto-Albanian *launja, from Proto-Indo-European *leuh₃- ‘release’ (compare English lose, Latin luere ‘to release from debt’, Ancient Greek λύω (lúō) ‘to untie, set free; dissolve’).
