Ancient Greek

Etymology

Uncertain. The etymology determination is complicated by the fact that the word is both in sense and form similar with Ancient Greek κρύπτω (krúptō), thus indicating possible (bi-directional) analogical influence.

Often considered to derive from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to cover), however Beekes argued that neither α-vocalism nor ύ + different labials (he considered Ancient Greek καλύβη (kalúbē, hut, cabin) and Ancient Greek καλύφη (kalúphē, submerged land) cognates) can be convincingly explained by Indo-European etymology and the root is from Lua error in Module:parameters at line 95: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "pregrc" is not valid.
