From Byzantine Greek καρφώνω (karphṓnō), from Koine Greek κάρφω (kárphō, to dry up, wither) + -ώνω (-óno),[1] apparently invoking the meaning of a derivative κᾰ́ρφος (kárphos, dry straw, chip of wood) > "nail" > "to nail, stab".
