Ancient Greek

Etymology

Both senses are cognates to κεντέω, -ῶ (kentéō, -ô, prick), κέντρον (kéntron, centre). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱent- with grade κοντ‑ from κεντ‑.

  • Hellenistic Koine sense short derived from the ancient sense κοντός (pole) which referred to shorter kinds of spears, poles, hence the sense shortness. Compare κοντοφόρος (kontophóros, carrying a (short) pole) in contrast to δορῠφόρος (doruphóros, carrying a (long) spear).[1]

Not related to ἀκόντιον (akóntion, javelin).
