Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Traditionally compared with Latin crusta, but there are semantic problems with this connection. Also compare Tocharian B kuraś, Latvian kruvesis, and Old High German hroso. Also see κρύσταλλος ‎(krústallos) and κρυμός ‎(krumós).
