From Proto-Indo-European *tyegʷ- (avoid, yield to). Cognates include Sanskrit त्यक्त (tyaktá, forsaken, abandoned) and त्यजति (tyajati, to forsake, abandon) and Avestan 𐬌𐬚𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬘𐬀𐬵- (iθaiiajah-), 𐬌𐬚𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬘𐬀𐬵- (iθiiejah-).
