Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic владѣти (vladěti), from Proto-Slavic *volděti (to rule). Compare the inherited doublet володе́ть (volodétʹ). Cognate with Bulgarian владе́я (vladéja, I control, possess), Latin valeō, valēre (I am worth, I am strong), English wield, German walten (to rule, prevail), Macedonian владее (vladee, to govern, be familiar with).
