From Proto-Slavic *kǫsъ (piece), from *kǫsati (to bite). Cognate with Slovak kus, Slovene kos, Serbo-Croatian кус/kus, Bulgarian къс (kǎs). According to Vasmer, perhaps also cognate with Greek κνώδων (knódon), Sanskrit खादति (khādati).
