Inherited from Old East Slavic стонати (stonati), from Proto-Slavic *stonati. Compare Bulgarian стон (ston), Czech stonat. Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek στόνος (stónos, a sighing or groaning), Latin tonō (to thunder, to resound) and Sanskrit स्तनति (stanati, to roar, to cry). Related to стена́ть (stenátʹ).
