From Old East Slavic тържьство ‎(tŭržĭstvo), торжество ‎(toržestvo), from търгъ ‎(tŭrgŭ) + -ьство ‎(-ĭstvo). Equivalent to торг ‎(torg) +‎ -ество ‎(-estvo).
