Inherited from Old East Slavic ѧзꙑкъ (ęzykŭ), from Proto-Slavic *(j)ęzỳkъ, from *(j)ęzy, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *inźūˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s.[1][2] Cognate with Russian язы́к (jazýk).
