From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰ-er-, from *h₁eǵʰ- ‎(balk, border). Cognate with Lithuanian ežià ‎(boundary-strip), ẽžeras, Latvian eža, ezers, Russian яз ‎(jaz, fish weir), о́зеро ‎(ózero).
