From Proto-Indo-European *tn̥ǵʰu- (to become firm, curdle, thicken). Cognates include Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc-, to draw together, contract), Persian تنجیدن (tanjīdan, to squeeze), تنگ (tang, narrow), Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬑𐬨𐬀 (taxma, brave, mighty), Lithuanian tankus (close, tight), German dicht and English tight. Related to թանկ (tʿank) and վտանգ (vtang), Iranian borrowings.
