From Proto-Indo-European *tn̥ǵʰu- ‎(to become firm, curdle, thicken). Cognates include Sanskrit तञ्च् ‎(tañc-, to draw together, contract), Persian تنجیدن ‎(tanjīdan, to squeeze), تنگ ‎(tang, narrow), Avestan [script needed] ‎(taxma, brave, mighty), Lithuanian tankus ‎(close, tight), German dicht and English tight. Related to թանկ ‎(tʿank) and վտանգ ‎(vtang), Iranian borrowings.
