From Proto-Indo-European *tn̥ǵʰu- (to become firm, curdle, thicken). Cognates include Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc-, to draw together, contract), Persian تنجیدن (tanjīdan, to squeeze), تنگ (tang, narrow), Avestan [script needed] (taxma, brave, mighty), Lithuanian tankus (close, tight), German dicht and English tight. Related to թանկ (tʿank) and վտանգ (vtang), Iranian borrowings.
