From Proto-Iranian *tánuš, from Proto-Iranian *tánuš, from Proto-Indo-European *ténh₂us (thin), from *ten- (to stretch). Cognate with Old Armenian թանկ (tʿank), an Iranian borrowing. Related to Latin tenuis, Latvian tievs (thin), Ancient Greek τανύω (tanúō), Sanskrit तनु (tanú, thin), Old English þynne (whence English thin).
