Hebrew[edit]

Noun[edit]

חודש \ חֹדֶשׁ ‎(khódeshm ‎(dual indefinite חודשיים \ חָדְשַׁיִם, plural indefinite חודשים \ חֳדָשִׁים) [pattern: קֹטֶל]

  1. a month
  2. (Biblical Hebrew) a new moon day

Usage notes[edit]

  • In the chronologically earlier texts of the Hebrew Bible the word denotes both the holiday of the new moon and a lunar month (the period between two successive such holidays). In later Biblical texts, as well as post-Biblical Hebrew texts and Modern Hebrew, only the denotation "month" is used (not necessarily a lunar month).
