Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wlg /warg/, leaf) (whence Early New Persian بلگ(balg)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *warkás ~ *walkás. Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬐𐬀(varəka), Sanskrit वल्क (valka, bark of a tree).
