Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwlwlʾn' /⁠xwarwarān⁠/, sunset, west). The "graveyard for victims of political execution" sense is from Khavaran cemetery, the unmarked cemetery in the capital of Tehran, located in the Khavaran district.
