[edit]Contraction of أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, “what”) + هو (hū, “it”), literally “what is it?”.
The first component, أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, “what”), is in turn from Arabic أَيْشٍ (ʔayšin), an ancient colloquial contraction of أَيُّ شَيْءٍ (ʔayyu šayʔin, literally “what thing, which thing”) that gradually displaced original مَا (mā), مَاذَا (māḏā, “what”).
