    Contraction of أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, what) +‎ هو (, it), literally what is it?.

    The first component, أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, what), is in turn from Arabic أَيْشٍ (ʔayšin), an ancient colloquial contraction of أَيُّ شَيْءٍ (ʔayyu šayʔin, literally what thing, which thing) that gradually displaced original مَا (), مَاذَا (māḏā, what).
