Inherited from Proto-Turkic *küneĺ (sun; sunny place); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰛𐰈𐰤𐰾 (küneš), Azerbaijani günəş, Bashkir ҡояш (qoyaş), Chuvash хӗвел (hĕvel), Tatar кояш (qoyaş), Turkmen güneş, Uyghur قۇياش (quyash), Uzbek quyosh and Yakut куйаас (kuyaas).
