Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀤𑀺 (maṇṇadi), from Sanskrit मन्यते (mányate), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mányatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mányatay, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥yo-, from *men- (to think).
