Perhaps a borrowing from a Semitic language, *may- and mayim mean water as well as any kind of liquid, a diluting or thinning thing; a reference to a thin layer of waxy film or the property of wax melting and becoming diluted or thinning, to a liquid form.[1] [2] [3]
